Q3: What were the outcomes of Detroit’s Urban Renewal Programs?

Note: each supporting question is designed to take up roughly one 50-minute class period, but feel free to add more time if needed and available.

This question asks students to use the 6W’s in assessing various records from Detroit citizens and city officials through the 1970’s to the early 2000’s to determine, based on community response and provided data, whether the urban renewal projects of the 1960s achieved their stated goals as identified in the previous lesson. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the author, trustworthiness of the source, and the author’s point of view regarding the city of Detroit after the 1960 urban renewal attempts.

For the formative task, ask students to make a claim based on their source work answering the prompt, “Was urban renewal successful in the city of Detroit?” Have students use two of the sources they reviewed in the assignment to support their argument as evidence, and ask them to provide reasoning behind their answer.
