Day 6: Creating a Housing Flyer

Standards

4 – P4.2.1 Develop and implement an action plan and know how, when, and where to address or inform others about a public issue.
4 – P4.2.2 Participate in projects to help or inform others.

Objectives

Students will be able to state a public issue in the form of visual advertisement/aid.

Instructional Activity

First, the students will be presented a primary source flyer. As a group, discuss what the person who made this flyer wanted to achieve.

The teacher will guide students in a discussion that allows for them to explain the concepts in their own words, with the ultimate goal of making their own flyer.  These will express students' individuality and may all be different. They can compare posters with their peers and explain why they did what they did.

Bring the class back together for additional discussion. Consider questions such as: 

If you were a leader in the community (with power) how would you handle this statement?

If you saw a flyer like this today what are somethings you could do? List who or what resources could help in creating an inclusive community.
