Day 3: Focus on Central Park Plaza
Lesson Summary:
Students will briefly study Detroit's Central Park Plaza and how it has changed over time. They will use brochures and advertisements from years ago and compare them to now. They will examine the language used and notice how that has changed over time. Students will make a list describing what urban renewal has done to Central Park Plaza over time using the resources they were given.
Standards
Social Studies: 6 – G5.2.1 Analyze the effects that a change in the physical environment could have on human activities and the actions people would be required to make (or would choose to make) in response to the change.
ELA: RI.6.2 Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
Objectives
Students will be able to compare and contrast characteristics of a region over time.
Students will be able to evaluate the changes that have taken place in Central Park Plaza and how Urban Renewal played a part in these changes.
Students will be able to analyze language used in advertisements and how that affects people already living in urban areas.
Teaching Stategies
Students will separate into groups and look at the Central Park Plaza brochure from 1962. They will discuss and make a list of what they notice about the language and imagery.
Students will view the current website advertising for Central Park Apartments, and they will discuss and make a list of what they notice about the language and imagery.
Students will then compare the two resources and make a list of changes that have occurred, and how they think urban renewal played a role in this.
Assessment
Each group will display their findings on a poster board.
