Day 2: Compare and Contrast: Renaissance Center

Standards

4- H3.0.2- Use primary and secondary sources to explain how migration and immigration affected and continue to affect the growth of Michigan.

Objectives

● Students will be able to analyze written primary sources to discern the perspective of the author.
● Students will be able to compare the perspectives of different primary sources and apply it to the broader issue.

Assessments

● Students will use the 6 W questions to analyze the artifacts and answer them on a worksheet.
● Students will write a reflection to answer the question, “Was the development of the Renaissance Center overall beneficial to the city of Detroit. Why or why not?”

Instructional Activities

● Review primary vs secondary sources and the 6 W questions and how they are efficient in analyzing primary sources.
● Read the first primary source, “What it Really Means!”. Use the 6 W’s to analyze as a class.
● Read the second primary source, the letter from the citizen, Use the 6 W’s to analyze in small groups using the worksheet.
● Read the response to the citizen. Discuss as a class.
● Look at/analyze the photos in Detroit: The Dream is Now to further see a positive perspective about the developments in Detroit.
● Give students time to discuss in small groups their overall feelings on this issue.
● Give students time to write their thoughts.
