Day 1: Introduction
Introduction
Key Ideas
Ask students to compare living in Detroit today to living in the city 50 years ago. What do they think is similar or different?
Discuss:
Introduce the idea of public housing and Sojourner Truth specifically.
Summarize the lessons students will be expected to participate in so they have a general idea for what the unit will entail.
Summary: This short clip on Sojourner Truth gives the students some quick facts
to absorb as they are introduced to the unit. The video goes through a quick
timeline on some interesting facts about Truth and how she was born into slavery
and paved her way as a women's rights activist. This is a great cartoon to help
elementary students gain an understanding for African American history as they
move through the unit activities.
Take-home Assignment:
Ask them to talk with their parents and grandparents about their memories of being a child. This might help them formulate ideas coming into the weekly lessons.
