JOE LISI SAYS:

1. In 1950 I became affiliated with the UAW Amalgamated Local 174 in Detroit thru the employment at the National Cold Forging Company in Dearborn, Michigan.

2. Transferred my union membership to the Mack Local 824 in New Brunswick, N.J.

3. Represented Local 824 in my first UAW Summer School at Pottstown, Penna. In August of 1951. This was the first contract I had in applying my voice and my guitar to the now famous labor songs.

4. After applying my successes in the UAW at the local· union level, I was sought out by Rutgers University to conduct programs for their Summer Schools. On leave of absence from the Mack plant, I conducted recreation programs at the University for the years of 1951; 1952; 1953; and 1954; besides conducting schools for the UAW in Region 9-A at Storrs, Connecticut; in Region 9 at Pottstown, Pa; and Region 8 in the Carolinas.

5. In 1955 while conducting the UAW and Rutgers Summer School programs an Education Director of the UAW attended one of the school sessions and observed the program that I had planned and conducted. Since I was a UAW member he asked me if I would go to Michigan to conduct similar programs at seven weeks of UAW Summer School there. After the Rutgers -Schools I went to Michigan to conduct the program thus exposing myself to seven regional directors. With the exposure of those seven directors and also the three in the Eastern part of the country, I was appointed to National UAW Recreation Department Staff.
