Resolutions Committee Resolutions
DELANO
GRAPE
STRIKE
Farm workers, and especially those employed on the huge corporation
farms that are run like factories in the fields, stand today where the UAW
stood thirty years ago, before the Wagner Act had established labor’s legal
right to union recognition and collective bargaining, and before the militance and solidarity of our members in the sitdown strikes and on countless
icket lines had driven home to our employers the fact that UAW was here
to stay and to be reckoned with.
For farm workers today there is still no legislation which insures their
right to organize, to bargain or to strike. They have no overtime premium,
no minimum wage, NO health or life insurance, no hospital-surgical-medical
benefits at all. Low wages and insecurity of employment condemn them to
degrading poverty throughout their lives. In California, for example, 84
percent of farm workers earned less than $3,000 last year, and the average
annual income was $1,378 for 134 days of work during the year.
Today, however, these workers are beginning to organize and to win
union recognition. Here in California workers in the vineyards at Delano,
after decades of bitter frustration and after many months on strike have
won their first union victories.

Thursday last represents the $5,000.00 commitment of the UAW for
December,
I spoke to Jack Conway yesterday and the $5, 000. 00 from
the Industrial Union Department is on the way.
It was good to have had the opportunity to join you in Delano
in support of this historic struggle of the grape workers and you can be
certain we shall continue to do what we can to help these workers win
their struggle.
Please keep me posted on developments.
Kindest personal regards.

The specific strike in Delano for which the contribution
request was originally made has now been settled but a series of other
grape workers strikes in the California area is underway and effective
organizing activity among farm workers is being undertaken.
May I
suggest that the $50 contribution from Local 969 be directed toward
the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee which is involved in
the organizing effort, the strike and the contract negotiations with
the growers in California.
We will withhold transmitting this check
pending advice from you on this matter.
In behalf of the International Union, may we thank you,
your fellow officers and the membership of Local 969 for the excellent
support which you have shown in this great task of organizing the farm
workers.

Brother
Reuther,
This letter which I write is not only from me, but
from all the farm workers who are struggling to reach a
better day.
With all sincerity,
the chance of our children
and us too, hopefully,
living a full life in a decent environment has been made possible by the kindness and generosity
of
our
older
union
brothers.
Without
them,
we
would
never
have been able to launch the campaign we now have underway.
We would
still be a small,
strugling band of farm workers-whose cause was just, but who simply did not have the finances
to make it.
Your great union has played a most important role in
the realization of our fight to a nationally known strike.
Your involvement from the very begining Brother Reuther, has
made our plight known to millions of people--people who might
not have noticed us or what we were fighting for if we had
been left to stand alone.
But because of your recognition,
we have in turn been recognized by America.
©
Of course our battle has not yet been won, but we are
securely on our way.
Our boycott is strong in almost fifty
cities now.
It is a major feat to pick up the tab for it,
though,
